Hand loomed, GOTS certified organic cotton throw
Exquisitely soft and thick, this throw has a intricate weave and looks stunning on a sofa, bed or cot.
Measures 100 x 170cm / 39¼ x 67 inches with fringes.
Handcrafted by weaving families in Southern Turkey who’ve been weaving beautiful textiles for centuries. Each family makes one or two styles on their own traditional wooden shuttle loom. It is a labour intensive process which results in very high quality products that last three to six times longer than factory made alternatives. This is because the cotton has been handled at slower speeds. When threads are run through factory machines at very high speeds, fibres become stressed resulting in a rough feel and poor quality thread.
Reward your senses with sustainable luxury.
Why organic cotton?
Conventionally grown cotton is one of the most damaging crops grown in the world today, whereas organic farming promotes clean air, water and soil. Organic cotton does not threaten wildlife or human health. Organic cotton is luxuriously soft, absorbent and very strong. It gets better with age – becoming softer with every wash. It is grown and processed without the use of harmful chemicals, and comes with the international GOTS certification. The comprehensive Global Organic Textile Standard requires certified organically grown fibre and then oversees the production, processing, manufacturing, packaging and labelling.
Ottoloom started with the discovery of the stylish, practical and luxurious pestamel (a flat woven Turkish towel). After discovering the vast majority of Turkish towels are now made in factories, to the demise of traditional weaving, Ottoloom began a mission to source Turkish pestamel made the old fashioned way on wooden shuttle looms.
After a long search in Turkey, finally the most beautiful textiles imaginable were discovered. All made by hand on wooden looms, in family homes using 100% GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) certified organic Turkish cotton. Not only do these beautiful textiles far out-last factory made equivalents, due to slow weaving speeds and yarn quality, every piece sold contributes to the livelihood of traditional Turkish weavers. Every piece can also be traced back to one maker. All are ethically sourced and produced using fair trade principles.
