Active Manuka Honey is renowned for its unique antibacterial properties and distinctive flavour. Wholesome and pure, just as nature intended, it is produced by bees in the remote bush country of New Zealand.
As well as being absolutely delicious, this honey is rich in antioxidants and has been independently tested and certified to contain a total antibacterial activity level of 15+*. This means activity that is due to the natural occurrence of hydrogen peroxide in honey plus the unique antibacterial properties that are only found in Active Manuka Honey. The 15+ refers to the testing method of comparing the antibacterial activity with that of Phenol – thus Active Manuka Honey 15+ has the same bacteria-killing power as a 15% phenol solution. This makes it suitable as a treatment for many external and internal conditions.

About Manuka HoneyManuka Honey is honey that is harvested from bees that collect pollen from the New Zealand Manuka plant (Leptospermum scoparium). It is known to have strong antibacterial properties and a distinctive flavour.
Most honeys are antibacterial in some respect. This antibacterial ability is mostly derived from Hydrogen Peroxide (H2O2), which comes from an enzyme, added by the bee. In the honey industry this is called "Peroxide Activity". Peroxide activity is delicate and unstable and can easily be destroyed by heat, light and water. However, in Manuka honey there is another antiseptic agent that is much more robust and can remain active against certain bacteria after being exposed to heat, light and water. It makes New Zealand Manuka honey unique.
“Active Manuka Honey” is the only honey available for sale that is tested for its level of antibacterial activity. It contains the additional antibacterial component found only in honey produced from Leptospermum plants. The number comes from a laboratory test for antibacterial activity, with the honey being compared with a standard reference antiseptic (phenol) for potency. A level of 10+ or higher is recommended and used by medical professionals.
