About Propolis

Propolis is a resin-like brown substance made by bees from material collected from trees and shrubs. Bees combine plant resins with their own beeswax and enzymes to make propolis. (It is a different product entirely from bee pollen.)

Bees use propolis to seal gaps in the hive, to sterilise the nest, and also to embalm intruding insects and animals too large to move out. Propolis has the same antibacterial and antifungal properties as the plant resins which form its base. Bees make use of these antibacterial properties to protect their hives, especially from the Bacillus larvae, an organism which causes disease in bees.

For humans, the benefits of propolis extend far beyond use as an antibacterial and antifungal agent. A growing body of scientific research shows that propolis, may be effective in combating viruses and halting the growth of certain types of cancer. All propolis, however, is not created equal. The properties of propolis vary widely depending on location and reflect the variability of plant material available to bees.

New Zealand BIO30™ propolis is certified to contain at least 30 mg/g of bioflavonoids – the active flavonoid compounds responsible for the biological activity in propolis – and caffeic acids. The high level of bioflavonoids in BIO30™ propolis is thought to be due to the plant sources available to bees in New Zealand’s remote and pristine environment.

BIO30™ propolis also contains Caffeic Acid Phenethyl Ester (CAPE) – a compound which cancer researchers have shown to suppress neurofibromatosis tumours.

New Zealand propolis is extremely high in the important dihydroflavonoids pinobanksin and pinocembrin, making up 70% of the flavonoid content, compared to levels of less than 10% in propolis from Brazil, Uruguay and China.

Propolis is collected by commercial beekeepers by scraping hive parts or from special propolis collection mats. Raw propolis is processed to remove beeswax and other impurities, before being used in propolis natural health products.

About Active Manuka Honey

Manuka Honey is honey that is harvested from bees that collect pollen from the New Zealand Manuka plant (Leptospermum scoparium). It is known to have strong antibacterial properties and a distinctive flavour.

Most honeys are antibacterial in some respect. This antibacterial ability is mostly derived from Hydrogen Peroxide (H2O2), which comes from an enzyme, added by the bee. In the honey industry this is called "Peroxide Activity". Peroxide activity is delicate and unstable and can easily be destroyed by heat, light and water. However, in Manuka honey there is another, non peroxide, antiseptic agent that is much more robust and can remain active against certain bacteria after being exposed to heat, light and water. This unique, non-peroxide antiseptic agent can be tested for and measured in various ways including UMF® (Unique Manuka Factor) , or MGOTM (Methylglyoxal).

Methylglyoxal measurement is a recent development, based on the discovery in 2006 that the naturally-occurring compound Methyglyoxal is the dominant anti-bacterial constituent in Manuka honey from New Zealand. The test for Methyglyoxal concentration uses highly-accurate and automated HPLC laboratory analysis. The number shows the tested concentration of Methyglyoxal mg/kg, ie MGO400+ has a concentration of more that 400mg of Methylglyoxal per kg of honey. (More than 100 mg/kg is the minimum necessary to kill all major bacteria types).

MGOTM400+ Manuka Honey is equivalent to UMF20+ Manuka Honey.
