2B Natural Insect Repellent
Tested on the ankles of Gnarly Old Hunters in Fiordland!
Long-lasting, 100% natural insect repellent effective against all biting insects, including sandflies and mosquitoes. Deet free. Made in New Zealand for New Zealand conditions. 60ml spray bottle.
A thorough application of 2B in the morning can last most of the day, expect up to 8 hours. This makes it one of the world’s longest-lasting natural repellents. 2B’s unique formula means the action of the essential oils is maximised to give far longer effectiveness than a single essence can provide in a candle or ointment form.
With 2B you’ll end up smelling a little like lemon cake, delicious to people but not to bugs! 2B’s coconut oil base gives great coverage without leaving a greasy film on the skin. 2B is water-resistant so doesn’t wash off when you sweat or swim in natural water in the same way that products containing solvents and alcohols do. 2B also doesn’t react with your suncreams like chemical repellents often do.
Chemical repellents used to be the only products that could give lasting protection and most contained DEET. This is a pretty strong chemical that should not be used for extended periods for health reasons, and can attack nylons and plastics like camera, sunglasses, gortex or fishing line. As a result many people choose not to use it and would certainly never use it on our children. There really is no need to use these old repellents now that Oil of Lemon Eucalyptus has been proven to give the same performance as the most effective chemical repellents.

Oil of Lemon Eucalyptus
Oil of lemon eucalyptus has been used for many years in China as a product known as Quwenling (translated as “effective repellent of mosquitoes”). Researchers in the U.S. began investigating this product in the early 1990s and identified the active ingredient as p-menthane-3,8-diol (PMD). PMD is registered with the EPA as a ‘biopesticide repellent’ meaning that it is derived from natural materials. Its products can be applied to human skin and clothing for the purpose of repelling insects, such as mosquitoes, biting flies and gnats, and is formulated as a spray and a lotion. PMD has also shown remarkable ability to repel mosquitoes when compared to DEET. DEET is the most popular synthetic commercial insect repellent but it has been linked to serious adverse effects, especially in children. When used in the field on humans in Tanzania in tests against a 10% DEET repellent, PMD products were shown to prevent bites for 4 to 7 hours after application for aggressive species of mosquito and for greater than 12 hours for less aggressive mosquitoes – PMD repellents out-performed the studied DEET repellent.
Lemongrass Essential Oil
Lemongrass essential oil is an effective insect repellent in its own right, aside from its many uses as an antifungal, antibacterial, anti-inflammatory and in the healing of connective tissue. In combination with Essential Oil of Lemon Eucalyptus you have a powerful and safe repellent.
Vanilla is an organic compound and the primary component of the extract of the vanilla bean. The world-wide demand for Vanilla far outstrips supply, and Vanilla is the second costliest spice, after Saffron. Its high cost is not due to rarity, but due to the intensive labour involved in processing the pods. We use an oil base form of Vanilla.
Fractionated Coconut Oil
Thinner than the unrefined oil and readily absorbed by the skin so doesn’t leave a greasy feeling. ‘Fractionated’ means it contains the fraction of the coconut oil from which almost all the long chain triglycerides have been removed, leaving an absolutely saturated oil. This saturation gives it a very, very long shelf life and greatly increased stability. In addition, fractionating raises the comparative concentration of Capric acid and Caprylic acid, thus giving it more of antioxidant and disinfecting effect.

Essential Oils are powerful, and that is why they have so many great applications. It is also why they can be unsuitable for a few people and for very young children. Treating infected bites can lead to a lot more problems than using a good repellent so it is important to do your homework and choose well.
If you do use 2B on a very young child then cover what skin you can, and then apply aiming for minimal body coverage focusing on the legs, arms and neck only. Finally wash off any skin product when not needed. If you have any particular concerns about your child’s skin or possible allergies please do consult a pharmacist or a doctor that can take into account any particular medical history.
During pregnancy and breastfeeding women can have unusual responses to all sorts of smells, body products and foods. We recommend the same advice as for very young children so that you can decide what product is best for you and how best to use it.
