Possums are a major ecological threat to New Zealand’s native forests. For over 10 years we have played a part in the "market solution" to this problem by selling Possum Merino clothing and accessories.
Brushtailed possums were first introduced to New Zealand in 1837 from their native Australia in hopes of starting a fur industry, and their numbers have exploded in the absence of predators. In the 1980s, approx. 70 million possums were chewing their way through about 21 000 tons of native vegetation each night. As well as competing directly with native birds for food, possums eat birds’ eggs, chicks and insects. Their voracious appetite threatens the survival of many of our native plants, insects and birds, including the iconic flightless kiwi.
Preservation of New Zealand's native forests require control of the possum population. Efforts to reduce the millions of possums have been boosted by companies that blend possum fur with merino wool to make luxurious garments.
Our webshop has a wide range of possum garments and accessories. So - become part of the solution – wrap up warm and wear Possum Merino.
